HEC'S TOP 77 SONGS OF 2017

2017 wasn't necessarily the best, but that doesn't mean that everything was terrible. Music, for one, certainly made 2017 a bit more bearable. From Taemin's sultry R&B track "Move" to Lana Del Rey's hauntingly celestial ballad "Love", 2017 more than delivered in that regard. Furthermore, songs such as Dua Lipa's pop anthem "New Rules", Red Velvet's infectious electro-pop track "I Just", and Becky G's unapologetic, Latin pop track "Mayores" further demonstrated the strength and catchiness of pop songs. As we hopefully welcome a better new year, it only feels fitting to acknowledge the impressiveness of this year in music. And with that, here are 77 excellent songs from 2017 which I deeply appreciate:

IU is, undoubtedly so, an incredible talent with artistry to match. And it always shows. Even when doing covers of songs, as is the case with her take on the 1988 track “Last Night Story” (originally sung by dance trio SoBangCha), she manages to captivate the essence of the original track while gracefully and effortlessly putting her own twist. The synth-driven dance pop track manages to maintain a charming nostalgic essence while exploring both modern electronic elements and allowing her sweet vocals to impress. For an artist who’s successfully dabbled in everything from jazz to R&B to a dance pop track with surf rock and disco elements, there seems to be absolutely no limits.

“I felt love / Connecting these dots / All of my thoughts / Follow our constellations”. Despite being criminally underrated, Bridgit Mendler continues to generously deliver magnificent tracks that both hit deep and flow so eloquently. Alongside RKCB, Mendler delivered the stunning “Diving” in mid-2017. The electronic-leaning Alternative R&B track, which possesses a deep bass-heavy cut, somehow still manages to feel like a chill, soothing breeze of fresh air. With spacey synthesizers and silky vocals that flow beautifully over an ethereal, nebulous production, Mendler continues to seriously impress through her thriving musical maturity.

The Man’s “Feel It Still” boasts an unexpectedly massive cross-over success into the mainstream, which is great because it’s absolutely, rightfully deserved. The complex, psychedelic pop track vibrantly comes to life through a catchy, funky bassline that is also favorably complimented by the lead vocalists’ pleasant falsetto. “Feel It Still”, which contains smart interpolations from The Marvelettes’ beloved “Please Mr. postman” as well as other influences that range from surf rock to soul, proudly embracing its retro roots and stands as one of the catchiest, most joyous songs of 2017.

“Congratulations, celebration / 'Cause my heart is the hardest to break”. Demi Lovato’s sixth studio album Tell Me You Love Me is a decisively R&B shift for the talented vocalist. And while the artist still seems to be growing and thriving, tracks such as “Cry Baby” successfully demonstrate her musical maturity until now while also giving her room to demonstrate her vocal prowess. The rock-influenced R&B pop track effortlessly shifts from smooth, soulful verses that show her vulnerability to a booming, insanely catchy chorus where she boldly professes her emotional turmoil. It also comes complete with a soaring guitar solo and her incredibly powerful vocals, which only make the song that much greater.

“중간에 내 맘 변해도 놀라지 말기 / 혹시 끌리지 않니 그럼 Excuse me”. (Translation: “Don’t be surprised even if I change my mind / Aren’t you attracted to me? Then excuse me”.) With the musically complex and highly experimental sophomore full-length effort Perfect Velvet, Red Velvet certainly proved that their newly developed status as one of the best K-pop girl groups isn't just for show. The up-tempo dance pop track "Peek-A-Boo" is certainly a sure sign of that, showing Red Velvet's newly improved “Velvet” side quite powerfully. The R&B-influenced track, which possesses tropical house elements, has a vibrant melody which succeeds in being haunting and mature, yet also catchy and lively. The bravely experimental track is also the group’s third massively successful release of the year, an impressive feat.

“I like it I’m twenty five / 날 미워하는 거 알아 / Ooh I got this I’m truly fine / 이제 조금 알 것 같아 날”. (Translation: “I like it I’m twenty five / I know you hate me / Ooh I got this I’m truly fine / I think I know a little bit about myself now”.) IU’s most personal music to date also happens to be, arguably speaking, her best. Her fourth full-length album “Palette” shows that despite IU’s magnificence, she still somehow manages to grow and improve even more with every album. Alongside G-Dragon, IU’s self-composed electropop lead track “Palette” is a soft ode to self-growth where IU charmingly self-reflects on life and both what it means to be herself and becoming an adult. And while smooth and minimalist, the R&B-leaning track very efficiently compliments IU’s celestial, layered vocals by beautifully blending her breathy voice with laid-back, mellow instrumentals. In addition, during a time where a lot of rap verses in pop songs seem to be inserted for the hell of it, G-Dragon’s rap verse (in which he warmly addresses and advices IU) impresses by feeling so necessary and complimenting the song.

“I know / You know, who's gonna pick you up / Who's gonna take you home”. Aly & AJ’s re-introduction into the music world saw them taking a sharp turn from fiery pop rock to a more chill, alternative pop route. Their dance-leaning dream pop track “I Know” is a great example of this, masterfully capturing the essence of 80’s dream pop while still connecting to the modern pop essence to be a song that feels legitimately timelessly classic in nature. With an enjoyable nostalgically-retro 808 drum machine, spacey synthesizers, and electronic productions, the duo’s silky vocals only further elevate the track while they melancholically sing about helping a struggling friend in their lives. The experimentality of the track is quite commendable and so is the refined artistry that the duo demonstrates within “I Know” as well as the other tracks in their Ten Years EP.

“I know / You know, who's gonna pick you up / Who's gonna take you home”.

“And, yeah, I know how bad it must hurt to see me like this / But it gets worse”. “Sorry Not Sorry” is the catchiest example of a metaphorical flashing of middle fingers, complete with bold verses, and unapologetic sentiments. Demi Lovato shines quite brightly within the R&B-leaning Dance-pop song “Sorry Not Sorry”, where she savagely dismisses the haters and commands your attention and respect. The rhythmic track only grows stronger through Lovato’s signature powerful vocals flawlessly sauntering non-apologies over the reverb-heavy productions, a deep bass, and a whole lot of electronic handclaps. In addition, although already having cemented herself as one of the most vocally gifted pop artists today, Lovato’s vocal performance in “Sorry Not Sorry” certainly serves as a bold reminder that she’s incredibly talented and has always been that bitch.

“Come over here and sit next to me / We can see where things go naturally / Just say the word and I’ll part the sea”. Foster the People took quite the experimental risk with their third studio album Sacred Hearts Club, shifting from their alternative rock roots to a neo-psychedelic influenced indie pop. Complete with saccharine synthesizers, bass-heavy dance productions, and handclaps, tracks such as “Sit Next to Me” delightfully capture the essence of psychedelic 60’s music and then tastefully blend it with modern dance pop. “Sit Next to Me” manages to be complex while also embracing an unapologetically charming vibrancy that helps it come across as both fun and mature. Furthermore, the laid-back dance tune fits Mark Foster’s voice so well, which allows it to feel like a signature Foster the People song even while undeniably being a lot different from their past material.

“내가 제일 좋아하는 건 여름 그 맛 / 내가 제일 좋아하는 건 여름의 너”. (Translation: “My favorite is the summer flavor / My favorite is you in the summer”.) “Red Flavor” holds a lot of different titles for different people. For many, it’s the song of the summer. For others, it’s also the song of the year. As for me, I genuinely believe it to be both. The critically acclaimed dance-pop track possesses an insane catchiness as well as an incomparable warm brightness, commanding attention through its sheer intensity and dynamic production and being both grandiosely anthemic while also having an underlying, mature complexity. Furthermore, the dance tune efficiently highlights the group’s powerful vocals and rapping, which only helps the song to ascend to new heights. “Red Flavor” is an addictive force to be reckoned with, oozing confidence, power, and exhilarating joyfulness. And in doing so, it only further demonstrates the true excellence of Red Velvet.
